Whenever a 18-year-old makes Real Madrid history in a key Champions League tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.
During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil round of 16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.
The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.
He signed for Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.
He progressed to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and determination he brought to the side.
During the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to train with the senior squad and awarded him minutes during the warm-up matches.
However, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I began playing the game, each day you head to training and each day you play a match," said the player following his debut.
"I have just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the world and in the best competition."
Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.
Pitarch has seized it with displays that have defied his age and experience.
"He is a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with great endurance, effort and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His standout trait is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I realize people are astonished to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to perform what he usually does.
"He will continue to get chances with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a player like him."
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, progressing through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's famous youth academy.
He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the choice to represent both nations at senior international level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a official full international.
He has played for Spain at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are watching his progress with keen attention.
In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision so far. My situation is great with Spain, but I will reach a decision soon."
His situation echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas teenage Lamine chose Spain, Brahim decided to play for the Atlas Lions.
At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He played over an hour in the 2-1 win at City, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight tie with the German champions.
His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the club chase future success.
After his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the same. We handle it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I have to deserve my minutes on the field," he commented following the win at Manchester.
