A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block in the background assisted us verify the footage.
Our team is checking video footage and photographs shared this morning that depict the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the pictures originated relied on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.
Locating other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
