Offspring of Ex- South African Leader Jacob Zuma Refutes Terror Allegations as Court Case Begins

The child of previous South African Leader Zuma has denied all charges to terrorism-related accusations at the start of her legal proceedings in the port city of Durban city.

The defendant, 43, is being tried over statements she posted on online platforms several years back during violent protests in South Africa that followed the arrest of her parent.

A seven-day period of anarchy in multiple regions of the country in July 2021, including plundering and fire-setting, left at least 300 deceased and caused damage worth an projected 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2 billion).

The defendant has been charged of fuelling this turmoil and faces charges of provocation to commit terrorism and public violence.

History of the Case

The demonstrations were focused in the areas of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal province and came after the ex-leader's arrest for defying a legal directive to give evidence at an investigation into accusations of impropriety while he was serving as president.

Ms Zuma-Sambudla has always rejected the accusations against her, with her lawyer earlier describing the prosecution's legal argument as unsubstantiated.

She has also frequently said the accusations against her were an attempt to address political scores with her father after he founded his own political organization and competed against the African National Congress.

Support and Legal Defense

This was supported by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which stated the proceedings was an "power abuse" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and familial persecution" against the previous head of state and his kin.

A handful of supporters from her group, her party, gathered outside the judicial building, while her father and other organization officials were present at the court sessions inside.

The defendant's representatives has argued that the testimony presented by government lawyers is inadequate and fails to provide substantial grounds for a conviction.
