Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is departing from the board at OpenAI, just a week after a series of electronic messages between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
He commented in an announcement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have participated, enthusiastic about the prospects of the enterprise, and look forward tracking their advancement".
Summers, who formerly presided over the Ivy League institution, declared on recently that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his connections with Epstein.
The freshly disclosed communications revealed that the economist exchanged messages with the financier until the eve of the financier's 2019 apprehension for alleged trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the technology organization stated it respected the economist's choice to step down.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the insight he brought to the governing body," OpenAI remarked.
This announcement follows after both chambers of the US legislature voted on Tuesday to pass a legislation that would mandate the federal prosecutors to disclose its records on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will then proceed to the desk of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. The President has indicated he expects to approve the measure, after changing his view on the issue following pressure from his followers.
A batch of Epstein-connected emails released by the Congressional committee recently mentioned numerous high-profile figures in the Epstein's previous network, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those figures.
The emails showed that the economist and the financier often met for meals, with Epstein often attempting to link Summers to prominent international personalities.
After the emails were released with the wider community, Summers expressed he accepted "full responsibility for my poor judgment to persist in corresponding with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he desired "to reestablish trust and mend connections with the persons closest to me".
Summers held high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; functioning as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under the former leader.
He presided over Harvard from five years and is still a academic there. When stating his withdrawal from public commitments previously on Monday, he said he would maintain his academic responsibilities.
Following the economist's announcement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a progressive think tank in DC where Summers was a researcher, announced that the economist was not affiliated with the institution.
Summers entered the leadership of the technology firm, which creates the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its top executive the company leader.
