Doctors in England are set to stage a five-day walkout next month, in protest over pay and employment.
The BMA announced that resident doctors will walk out for five days in a row from November 14 at 7am to November 19 at 7am.
Resident doctors, who constitute about half of all doctors in the National Health Service, are taking this action after failed negotiations with the government.
Dr Jack Fletcher commented, “This is not where we wanted to be. We have spent the last week in talks with government, urging the health minister to resolve the scandal of unemployed physicians.”
“We know from our own survey half of second-year doctors in England are facing unemployment, their talents being unused whilst millions of patients endure long waits for care and shifts in hospitals remain vacant. This is a situation which cannot go on.”
He added, “We talked with the government in good faith, keen for the minister to understand that a deal offering solutions to slowly restore the pay reductions over several years, giving recent graduates a raise of only £1 per hour for the coming four years.”
“We trusted the government would recognize that our asks are not just fair but are in the best interests of the public and our patients and would also help stop our physicians leaving the health service.”
Junior physicians have as much as eight years of experience practicing in hospitals, depending on their specialty, or as many as three years in primary care.
