In a Sunday TV interview, US lawmaker Bill Cassidy voiced hope that a bipartisan agreement on the cost of medical care remains within reach, despite the legislature's failure of competing proposals last week.
Speaking on a major news program, the GOP senator from Louisiana, who chairs the relevant Senate panel, stressed the necessity for a "common understanding" between members of the opposing party and his GOP colleagues.
This call comes after the Senate voted down two distinct Democratic and the other party's legislative efforts aimed at addressing healthcare expenses, underscoring the ongoing division over how to handle soon-to-expire tax credits that assist many people purchase insurance under the ACA.
"It is essential to place money in the consumer's hands to pay the deductible," Cassidy remarked, arguing that Democrats must too account for the strain of steep out-of-pocket costs.
One measure sought a three-year renewal of the increased subsidies. Conversely, the legislation put forward by Cassidy and a Republican colleague focuses on providing funds of $1,000 into HSAs for individuals in specific coverage tiers.
The Republican measure garnered no Democratic support. However, the senator remained optimistic, suggesting he would be willing to a "temporary extension" of the premium tax credits in return for addressing the issue of costly out-of-pocket expenses.
"In my view an agreement to be had on this issue," Cassidy added. "It is imperative to push for that agreement."
These comments coincide with several senators show hope that a type of compromise could materialize following the recent unsuccessful votes. A number of Republicans have signaled a willingness to temporarily continue the boosted subsidies, with certain restrictions, noting that approximately 22 million Americans might see their help when the credits expire soon.
"We can get this done," Cassidy said. "I believe we can meet the concerns, both about the out of pocket, but also about the premium."
The senator stated he was currently working to craft a compromise that could appeal to both sides. "Let's address our concerns," he concluded.
