Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and at least 15 others were hurt in what appears to be premeditated detonation from gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.
The blast took place as officers and emergency crews went into the house near Verona to execute an removal notice for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.
Each of the three victims who died belonged to the Italian military police.
One male and one female were arrested at the location and another man who fled following the explosion was located not long after. Each of them have been taken to hospital.
The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the scene displayed the structure turned into a pile of rubble.
âThis is a time for grieving,â said the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to evict the three siblings in the earlier times.
The president of the region of Veneto, the regional head, explained the farmhouse was under an eviction order due to financial obligations accrued by the three owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to talk with the family members who had locked themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the residents triggered the explosion.
âAs we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,â local police chief Claudio Papagno informed news outlets.
âA gas cylinder had been activated, and the explosion directly hit our officers,â he said.
Incendiary devices were also located at the residence, the Interior Minister confirmed.
Injured individuals by the blast comprised an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three members of national police and a fire services member.
As stated by the local prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.
The prosecutor was convinced the detonation had occurred on a floor above the entrance and told reporters it was a âdeliberate and pre-planned murderâ. Just prior to the blast, he mentioned personnel had ânoticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas canisters being turned onâ.
âEveryone was aware the circumstances were severe,â neighbors told Italian media, mentioning that the trio had in the past stated to âdetonate the propertyâ rather than vacate the property.
âThe explosion had left a âterrible, very painful and dramatic tollâ.â
The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in commemorating the three men who had been killed in the line of duty.
