“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” echoed around the City Ground as Forest followers reveled in another result against Malmö. A great deal has happened since Trevor Francis’s decisive header clinched the continental trophy back in 1979, but Forest continue to cherish those glorious moments. Equally, significant shifts have taken place in the five weeks since the manager took charge, with Forest looking refreshed and securing a convincing win courtesy of goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Milenkovic, enhancing their hopes of progressing in the Europa League.
For Forest, this result – against a Malmö side that had not played for almost three weeks after finishing in sixth place in their home competition – represented a third consecutive triumph across all competitions and added to the momentum generated from last weekend’s stunning victory at Liverpool. While this match was a re-run of the club's historic success in name, the game itself was devoid of any real tension or jitters.
It proved to be an occasion dripping in nostalgia, an eagerly awaited meeting and the third competitive meeting between the teams since the showpiece event 46 years ago.
Forest leaned into the history, paying tribute to the legends of 1979 by giving them, along with their Malmö opponents, the VIP welcome. Thirteen members of the Swedish club’s team from that time were additionally present. Both teams enjoyed a dinner together before the match. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and their teammates received a tumultuous reception when they assembled on the pitch a quarter of an hour before the start, and a typically superb display was shown in the Trent End.
“May 30, 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left flank,” read one part of a giant tifo, in capital letters. While nobody needed reminding of what ensued, the remaining section was unfurled as the players came out from the tunnel. “And there’s Francis,” it continued. A second brilliant display depicted Clough observing events beside his right-hand man Taylor on a bench at the Olympiastadion.
So, Forest had drunk in those beautiful memories, but what about the performance on the evening? It was strong, too. They were in full command from the moment Kalimuendo whistled an effort wide inside the opening moments and built a 2-0 advantage by the break. Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Abbott, on his first European start, had a go.
It felt fitting that Yates, who came to Forest aged eight, made the initial breakthrough in the Malmö defence led by their own academy product skipper, Pontus Jansson, formerly of Leeds United and Brentford. The home centre-back Nikola Milenkovic saw a delivery cannon off a opponent and into the pathway of the midfielder, who finished with his right foot from just inside the box to score his maiden strike since March.
The scorer was involved in Forest’s next goal on the verge of half-time, too, his unmarked header parried by Malmö’s shot-stopper Melker Ellborg but Kalimuendo poised to tap in the rebound from point-blank range. McAtee, the midfielder handed a seldom start and only his second appearance since September, was the spark, lofting a perfect ball towards Yates at the back post.
A minute earlier, Callum Hudson-Odoi driven shot was deflected aside off Malmö back Colin Rösler, the son of ex- Man City striker Uwe, and an unmarked Milenkovic also earlier had a powerful header instinctively repelled by Ellborg, who was back in place of the former Villa goalie Olsen.
This was Malmö’s initial game since the Swedish Allsvenskan concluded on 9 November, and they found it hard to equal the home team's intensity. Forest extended the lead to three when the defender scored after his defensive colleague Murillo kept alive a set-piece. The captain had a shot stopped, but the Serbian defender Milenkovic feasted on the leftovers.
Forest then pushed for more, with Hudson-Odoi dinking a effort on to the bar before Sangaré sent an optimistic shot wide from distance. It was that kind of evenings. Dyche, mindful of the upcoming league game here against Brighton, made multiple alterations from the side that stunned Liverpool at Anfield last weekend, when they also scored three times, though he called on Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and further fresh legs during the final period.
It turned out to be a hiccup-free evening for Forest. Dyche could withdraw Murillo with the match already sewn up and subsequently brought on 19-year-old full-back Sinclair for his first-team debut. Dyche discussed the Forest old guard providing “bits of gold” at weekly get-togethers and, almost five decades on, the current crop demonstrated they are able of producing of thrills, too.
