During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its prevailing cynical streak. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
